Tom Thomson Art Gallery
From January 22 to February 28 the Tom Thomson Art Gallery presents Convergence: 47th Annual Juried Exhibition of Fine Art. All are welcome to join us for the opening reception and awards ceremony on Friday January 22 at 7pm. This popular exhibition is a perennial favourite on the Tom Thomson Art Gallery calendar. Featuring work by artists from across the province, Convergence is an opportunity to reflect on contemporary arts practice, examining the issues, subjects and methods that are relevant to artists. A broad range of media is represented including painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and craft. The exhibition aims to reward excellence and innovation in artistic production. Since this annual show "takes the pulse" of artmaking in the region, we look for work that exemplifies what makers are thinking about - contemporary artists' concerns, working methods, and methods of exploration. Three jurors took on the task of selecting the exhibition from over 360 works of art submitted. Rhona Wenger was born in Lawrence, Kansas and raised in Saskatoon, Sask. She studied Art History at Queen’s University in Kingston, receiving her B.A. in 1979 and her M.A. in 1985. The sculpture was reviewed in the 2005 fall edition Espace magazine and unveiled later that year. He has served on Kitchener’s Public Art Working Group for over six years. Michael Jacob Ambedian through his artistic practice has been exploring discarded materials, and touching on themes including play, child-wonder, labour, spirituality and environment. Since 1998 Michael has exhibited his work throughout southern Ontario at CAFKA 2001& 2005, the Art Gallery of Windsor, the John B. Aird Gallery and in Michigan at the Detroit Contemporary Gallery. The jury for Convergence: 47th Annual Tom Thomson Art Gallery Juried Exhibition was held on Friday, December 11th and selections for the exhibition have been made.
